Overview of Economics Department
The Department of Economics is one of the eleven departments in Paramed College, providing qualified Economics graduates at undergraduate level across regular, extension, and distance programs.

The Department of Economics aligns its strategic plan with the college-wide Balanced Scorecard (BSC) system — ensuring long-term and short-term objectives, financial and non-financial goals, and internal and external performance indicators are fully integrated. This systematic approach enhances the department’s ability to meet its mission and vision effectively.
General Objectives of the Program
- Produce high-level professionals in Economics to support sustainable economic development.
- Offer students a strong foundation for professional and academic careers through coursework and thesis work.
- Equip students with solid knowledge of economic theory relating to development, resources, and socio-economic issues globally.
- Produce qualified experts, support community development with research outcomes, and enhance national development goals including Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).
Specific Objectives of the Program
- Train Economists with foundational skills in teaching and research.
- Build strong understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic theories for practical application.
- Equip students with methodological tools to analyze economic phenomena and design policy.
- Expose learners to applications of economics across fields such as labor, agriculture, industry, environment, and finance.
- Produce graduates skilled in planning, project preparation, monitoring, and evaluation.
- Enable students to conduct theoretical and applied research that supports national development strategies.
- Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across programs in training, research, and extension.
- Offer short-term training and consultancy services to organizations and communities.
- Help students understand the evolution of economic science and stay updated with the field’s dynamism.
Admission Requirements
- Successful completion of preparatory level and passing the Ministry of Education entrance exam.
- Meeting the standards set by the department.
Duration of Study
The program spans four years, with each term consisting of 16 weeks.
Graduation Requirements
- No “F”, “NG”, or “I” grade in any course.
- Completion of the minimum Ethiopian Credit Transfer System (EtCTS) requirements and all mandatory courses.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.
